One of the most important things before starting a business is to deliver your
elevator pitch correctly being able to confidently and effectively communicate
your ideas will have so many benefits instead of people asking you so what do
you do again you will immediately know how to answer them and how to deliver
that pitch in such a way as to be convincing and to prompt people to want
to be involved with your company the only way to get good at an elevator
pitch is to practice it over and over and over start practicing your elevator
pitch actually write it down and try and memorize it and then just say it over
and over until it's it's second nature so there are a few rules about elevator
pitches they should be short much less than three minutes I would say try and
get to 60 seconds try to stick with the core point and the value the hook the
interesting piece because the elevator pitch really should be getting people's
attention and prompting them to want to ask you more questions stay away from
the nitty-gritty the details this is something that you should be able to
communicate your elevator pitch to literally anybody and my greatest
victory was when I pitched my company audit ood to my 90 something year old
grandfather and he sort of he sort of understood that I was very excited about
something in the industry the other thing that I like to do is to watch
other people's elevator pictures and there is a great link here that you see
that is all of the Rice University business plan competition pictures our
back-to-back rapid-fire and you'll be able to tell after you watch a couple of
them a good elevator pitch from a bad elevator
now people often say wow but I can't speak like you Nick because you've
you're so polished you've practiced it so many times and you you really seem to
know your content but I say that anybody can do it you if you practice enough
will know your pitch better than anybody and being able to say with confidence
that you can get as good as the best speakers out there it's just a matter of
how much effort do you put into you rehearsing and practicing I think that
it is a misconception that some people are better speakers than others and some
people are more confident more poised etc it's just something that you just
get good at with with practice and that's something that you can control
specifically practice your pitch five times a day
why not it's it's something that nobody's watching nobody's recording it
you can make mistakes so do it.
